The NI tanks (Na Ispug: Terror Tanks, also called Odessa Tanks) were Soviet improvised light tanks. In August 1941, when Odessa was cut off of tank supplies, P.K. Romanov of the January Uprising Factory proposed armored tractors and trolleys. 3 STZ-5 tractors were fitted with boiler plate sandwiched with wood or rubber sheeting for protection. The armament of these tanks varied from T-26 Model 1931 turrets to new turrets with with 37mm Model 15 R mountain guns to 45mm anti-tank guns. A total of 68 NI tanks were built. They were effective against Romanian infantry.
