modified: Nov 10, 2012

The T-80 was a Soviet light tank (not to be confused with the later T-80 Main Battle Tank). It is a further improvement on the T-70 by Astrov's team in 1942. The major modification is the larger, better armored, two-man turret instead of the one-man turret of the T-70. Other modifications include strengthened suspension, and wider track and electrical turret traverse. Additional armor was welded on the hull.

Although the T-80 was a successful design, at that point in the war, more heavily armed tanks were necessary to counter new German tank designs. Furthermore, Lend-Lease light tanks that can fulfill the role of the T-60, T-70 and T-80 were now availalble. Therefore, only about 120 T-80s were built.
